Daemen University’s Center for Interprofessional Learning and Simulation (CILS) hosted a spring Interprofessional Event (IPE) on April 8, 14, and 21, welcoming 146 students from Daemen’s physician assistant, registered nurse and nurse practitioner, and physical therapy programs, as well as 24 speech language pathology students from Buffalo State.Group of college students and faculty gathered around a simulated hospital bed with a manikin lying in it.

The three-day event, held in the CILS hospital suite, focused on interprofessional interactions among students working in small groups in a grand rounds setting, enabling them to observe varying perspectives from health professionals in other fields.

The event was facilitated by faculty and staff, including Dr. Pam Bartlo, PT, DPT, CCS; Allyson Kirk, MPAS, PA-C; Dr. Veronica Valazza, DNP, MBA, RN, CNE, NE-BC; Marci Zynda, MSN, NP; Tony Surace, CILS executive director; and Liz Wright, associate vice president for Academic Relations and Public Affairs.Group of college students and faculty gathered around a simulated hospital bed with a manikin lying in it.

“The expansion of our CILS IPE events to include outside institutions is instrumental to continuing the growth of the CILS offerings for our students and community partners,” said Surace. “We have been able to have our Daemen healthcare students and other institutions’ students interact interprofessionally, focusing on communication and teamwork during these IPE events, which is great to see.”

Surace added that the feedback from students has been positive, noting, “They really see the benefit and enjoy doing these once they work through the initial hesitation of working together as a group.”
