Gracelyn Bishop, Jacklin Vollmer and Shalese Price, accompanied by Dr. Aakriti Tandon, faculty advisor and associate professor of political science, represented Denmark in a high-level simulation of the European Union.

As the Danish delegation, Daemen students engaged in collaborative deliberations on contemporary European challenges, demonstrating strong analytical skills, policy knowledge, and teamwork while gaining practical insight into the complexities of multilateral governance. Two women standing, facing each other and talking, one is wearing a green dress and one is wearing a black dress.

“Their participation reflects both the growing emphasis on experiential learning in political science education and the importance of developing global competencies through immersive simulations,” said Tandon.

Students found the experience rewarding. “I had a fun time doing this,” said Vollmer. “I learned to negotiate and propose new ideas that aligned with the country I was representing. I will definitely do this again next year if time permits.”Three women standing together holding a white banner with black text and round logos on it

Bishop added, “Although I had no prior experience with how an EU simulation ran, I’m very glad to have taken this opportunity. What was a bit intimidating at first became one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career. I had the opportunity to learn, grow, debate, and interact with peers from near and far, all of whom had something valuable to bring to the table. There’s no doubt I’ll be participating next year, serving as the Head of Government of another country. I encourage students to take up opportunities like these; you won’t be disappointed with the outcome!”

The SUNYMEU brings together more than one hundred students from multiple institutions to assume the roles of EU member-state leaders to negotiate pressing policy issues, offering a hands-on learning experience in diplomacy, negotiation, and policymaking.
