Daemen University’s Director of Career Services Lamark Shaw has built quite a legacy around campus since joining Daemen in 2011 as an adjunct instructor. His passion for empowering students and encouraging their success has left an impact on many current students and alumni who credit Shaw with helping them find their first job. Among his many accomplishments, he helped co-found Dare 2 Dream, a program providing personal growth and guidance for Daemen students. He’s also board president for Tru-Way Community Center in Buffalo, which provides at-risk youth with meals and after-school education.
We sat down with Shaw to learn more about his role on campus and to get an inside look at the unique benefits Career Services has to offer students.
Could you tell us about Career Services at Daemen?
We are here to provide resources for our students in terms of their professional documents, including their resumes, cover letters and reference letters. We also provide assessments if students need to explore their major or career path. Our career closet, which we keep stocked with a wide range of inclusive sizes, is here in our office if students need clothing for a job interview or an internship. We try to make sure our students are ready for life during and after college. These services are also available for alumni.
What about Career Services makes you most proud?
I honestly believe that one of the most valuable things we provide for our students are networking opportunities. We give them the ability to get in front of an employer. We facilitate the Career Internship Expo and we also have ROC (Recruiters on Campus), where students can meet with company representatives and talk to them about jobs and opportunities. Networking is the number one way of finding jobs and I am proud to say that is one of the services we provide in Career Services.
What is something people may not know about you?
Outside of Daemen I manage a clothing company called United Men’s Fashions, which has been in the City of buffalo since 1929. Working here gives me the opportunity to network and connect with a lot of people in the community.
