Two Daemen Alfiero School of Business Sport Management students netted an exciting experiential learning opportunity by participating in the NHL Draft in Buffalo June 26-27.
The opportunity, presented to Daemen by the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission, gave Jenae Samuels and Vondin Henderson an immersive look at the sports industry while they soaked up the hands-on learning experience of a lifetime.
“Opportunities such as the NHL Draft held in downtown Buffalo provide students with invaluable exposure to the sport industry and help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application,” said Steve Chasey, assistant professor of sport management, business administration, and MBA. “Experiences like these allow students to apply concepts they’ve studied, build meaningful professional networks, and gain firsthand insight into the fast-paced environment surrounding a major sporting event, helping them develop the confidence, perspective, and professional relationships that will serve them throughout their careers.”
Samuels served as a guide to families from all over the world, escorting each draftee’s family to the social media room and family lounge while building relationships with them to make them feel welcome.
“Working at the NHL Draft was an unforgettable experience and a major milestone in my journey as a sport management student,” said Samuels. “Throughout the event, I was able to network with my peers and professionals from various sectors of the NHL, gaining valuable insight into the sports industry.
The highlight of her experience was speaking with Laila Edwards, an American ice hockey forward and the first Black woman to compete for Team USA in women’s ice hockey at the Olympics. “Her words of encouragement and inspiration reminded me to stay focused on my goals and continue believing in my potential,” Samuels said. “This experience strengthened my passion for the sports industry and reinforced that I am on the right path toward building a successful career in sport management.”
Henderson rotated with 31 other guides during all seven rounds of the draft to escort recently-drafted players through the arena for media interviews with ESPN, NHL Network, Sportsnet, and additional team media.
“It was an incredible experience to be part of such a special day for these players. Being able to help guide them through one of the biggest moments of their lives was something I’ll always remember,” Henderson said.
