Philip Longson

Philip Longson is an assistant professor of visual and performing arts at Daemen College and is the inaugural program director of illustration. He also oversees the department’s foundation design courses.

Prior to Daemen, Longson taught courses and workshops in design, color theory, drawing, figure drawing, and illustration at the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art, Buffalo Arts Studio, Villa Maria College, and the New York State Art Teachers Association.

A member of the Association of Illustrators, Longson earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Lincoln in England and a master of fine arts from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. After graduating, he served in a residency at Edinburgh College of Art, where he illustrated his first children’s books and taught classes and workshops for undergraduate students.

As a freelance illustrator, Longson has primarily worked in narrative fiction, most notably illustrating children’s picture books of Scottish fables. His work has been published in the UK, Ireland, Italy, and the U.S.

Outside of Daemen, Longson enjoys playing guitar and piano and travelling. Since moving to the U.S., he particularly enjoys visiting America’s national parks.
