Daemen College will host a reading and discussion series on civic engagement that will be based on the writings of some of the most renowned authors in philosophy, literature, and religion.
“The Civically Engaged Reader” program, sponsored by Humanities New York, will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays from April 25 to May 16 in Daemen’s Business Building.
Discussions on civic engagement and community service will reflect on an anthology of short readings drawn from published works by a range of authors, including Jane Addams, Aristotle, Bertolt Brecht, Andrew Carnegie, Toni Morrison, and Pablo Neruda. Participants will be provided books for their use while in attendance at each event.
Facilitator Dr. Maureen Millane, associate vice president for community engagement, will lead the discussions on each author’s insights on the importance and impact of service in our communities.
“The program is designed to engage area residents in facilitated and insightful discussions on civically engaged activity and its significance in improving the quality of life in our communities,” said Millane. “At Daemen, civic engagement and service learning is a key part of the college experience, and the focus of this program reinforces the importance of these efforts.”
