This spring, a partnership with the Western New York Book Arts Center and the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) department will offer the public a virtual “Daemen Speaker Series,” featuring three virtual presentation workshops. The workshops will be hosted by Book Arts and led by faculty from the Leadership and Entrepreneurship in the Arts Program (LEA) program. The partnership is a collaboration to educate and inspire those who participate, as well as to bring awareness and visibility to the LEA program and VPA programs at Daemen.
Presentation topics will include introductions to artists as entrepreneurs, non-profit leadership, grant writing, marketing and branding, client management, and more.
The workshops kick off on April 29 with “Artists as Entrepreneurs,” featuring Daniel Shanahan, assistant professor, LEA program director, and co-founder and artistic director of Torn Space Theater. In this workshop, Shanahan will speak broadly about the cultural nonprofit industry and give an introduction to artist “need-to-knows,” such as grant writing and the formation of a nonprofit.
On May 27, Philip Longson, assistant professor at Daemen, will speak to his expertise as a working artist, educator, and professional illustrator in a workshop titled, “Marketing Skills for Artists.” Longson will offer tips on illustrating for publishers, working with and acquiring clients, and more.
On June 23, Daemen’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement Emily Burns Perryman will partner with Christy Francis, a member of the institution’s marketing team and LEA faculty member, to present “Branding for Artists.” This last workshop will dive into personal branding for those in the arts and cultural communities.
The virtual Daemen Speaker Series is intended for artists and arts-curious individuals interested in learning about, or working in, a creative field. All experience levels are welcome and the events are free and open to the public.
