A picture of The Monster Under the Bed from a scene in the movie.“Unplugged,” a short film produced by three Daemen University alums, will be screened at the Filmapolooza 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The family comedy is about a monster under the bed who has to take on his biggest job yet – sparking the imagination of a client who is too connected to her cell phone.

“Unplugged” was named the Audience Choice Winner at the 2023 Four Points Film Festival, a global filmmaking competition. It was produced at Daemen’s Girard House in November.

The cast and crew included Cameron Garrity ‘13, the associate director of Branding & Design in the university’s Marketing and Communications Department and a student in the Leadership & Innovation Program; Nicole Dzimira ‘13, Illustration; and Emily Weaver ‘23, Business Administration and student in the Leadership & Innovation Program. They worked with professionals from Buffalo’s film industry, several internationally recognized puppet artists, as well as a former member of the cast of Broadway’s Hamilton.

Each team had three days to write, produce, and edit a 4-7 minute-long original film. The competition included 100 teams from 16 countries.

“To be recognized in this way is tremendously humbling and is also a testament to the talented members of our team who came together to make this film. ‘Unplugged’ is a story that illustrates the power of creative thinking, which I believe to be a true reflection of the amazing artists who brought the story to life,” said Garrity.

As winners of the Audience Choice Award, the team received $500 and the chance to have their film screened at Filmapalooza. The film fest takes place March 20-23, 2024.
