Filmmaker and Buffalo native Erin Bagwell will discuss her powerful documentary “Dream, Girl,” which showcases the stories of inspiring female entrepreneurs, at a special film screening scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 28 in Daemen College’s Wick Campus Center Social Room.
The event will open the college’s 2016-17 Nancy Haberman Gacioch Entrepreneurship Lecture Series. A question and answer session moderated by Daniel Shanahan, assistant professor of entrepreneurism, will immediately follow the screening.
As part of the event, Daemen will honor Nancy Haberman Gacioch in recognition of her support and contributions to the success of the college’s Entrepreneurship Program and the lecture series.
“Nancy Haberman Gacioch is a highly successful entrepreneur who has used her generosity and knowledge to assist countless aspiring female entrepreneurs,” said Shanahan. “This screening offers a fitting opportunity to acknowledge all that Nancy has done for our college, students, and the Weestern New York community.”
“Dream, Girl” tells the stories of five empowering and ambitious female entrepreneurs of a range of businesses, from new startups to multi-million dollar companies. Through in-depth interviews, women in the film speak openly about the struggles and triumphs that come with entrepreneurship for women.
Since its release in June, the film has premiered to a sold-out audience in New York City and has been screened at the White House and other locations around the world. The film has also been featured in Forbes, The Washington Post, ELLE, and many other media outlets across the U.S.
Bagwell, a New York City-based filmmaker and feminist blogger, became interested in the power of female entrepreneurship after starting her blog Feminist Wednesday, for which she profiled women who were building meaningful businesses. The entrepreneurs inspired her to produce and direct the film “Dream, Girl,” which was made by an all-female production crew.
The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) has named Bagwell and fellow “Dream, Girl” producer Komal Minhas to its inaugural SuperSoul 100 list that honors extraordinary leaders who use their voices and talent to elevate humanity.
Daemen’s film screening event is free and open to the public. It is being co-sponsored by the college’s Entrepreneurship Program and the Office of Academic Affairs in partnership with the Women’s Studies Program and the American Association of University Women student organization.
