An animated film created by Daemen College alumnus Lucas Santos ’19 for his senior project in the college’s unique animation program was screened this month at the prestigious Glendale International Film Festival in California and the Buffalo International Film Festival.

His film, “Fresh Air,” was shown on Oct. 12 at the sixth annual Glendale International Film Festival, which showcases films from local, national, and international student filmmakers and screenwriters, as well as independent filmmakers and artists. Hundreds of student works are screened by audiences in Glendale, Calif., giving students exposure to major studios and industry professionals. More than 60 awards are presented to filmmakers in a variety of categories.

Now in its 13th year, the Buffalo International Film Festival celebrates regional, national, and international filmmakers. The festival features workshops, seminars, and discussions with industry professionals to help students and other artists gain insight and connect with professional production studios.

“Lucas’s film is a great example of his amazing talent and the hard work that went into producing this incredible film,” said Mike Jones, assistant professor and program director of animation. “His film, ‘Fresh Air,’ showcases what is possible in Daemen’s animation program and what we strive to achieve with all our students. We could not be prouder of Lucas and the recognition he is receiving, and we look forward to him continuing to do remarkable work.”

“Fresh Air” focuses on the struggles of a young alien attempting to escape futuristic technology so he may enjoy the quiet outdoors. The yearlong project was created using a variety of advanced animation software that help students gain hands-on experience using in Daemen’s animation program.

Santos, who earned a bachelor of fine arts in animation in May, premiered his short film at Daemen’s Senior Show held last spring.
