Congressman Tim Kennedy held a press conference at Daemen University’s Rosary Hall in support of his legislation, the Loan Equity for Advanced Professionals (LEAP) Act, on Dec. 22.
The LEAP Act focuses on providing financial support for advanced degree students, including nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and physician assistants. Kennedy’s bill would ensure eligibility for all students pursuing post-baccalaureate degrees to borrow $50,000 annually, with a borrowing total of $200,000.
“The LEAP Act restores fairness by ensuring that graduate students pursuing essential high-demand careers have the same access to federal student loans as other professional degree programs,” said Kennedy. “If you’re willing to do the hard work, long hours, demanding clinicals, and emotional toll, your ability to get an advanced education won’t be limited by your finances.”
Kennedy said he relied on student loans to cover tuition, books, and other expenses when he was pursuing his degree, as did his wife, Katie, who earned her Doctorate in PT from Daemen. “Access to federal student loans made a career of service possible for me and my family,” he said. “Without that access, I wouldn’t be standing here today, nor would my wife or many people in this room.”
Daemen President Dr. Gary A. Olson echoed support for the LEAP Act, saying, “As a longtime educator of graduate students in the healthcare areas, Daemen knows how important it is for students to receive adequate support. I applaud Congressman Kennedy for his dedication, as well as all of you for your support in helping ensure future professionals have the resources needed to pursue their professional goals.”
