Daemen University’s English and Visual and Performing Arts departments have co-produced Mistero Buffo (Comic Mysteries), a series of satirical religious stories authored by Dario Fo and Franca Rame based on medieval manuscripts.
Mistero Buffo will be performed in Daemen Hall as part of Daemen’s ShowCASE of Academic Excellence on April 15, which features research and creative projects by students in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education.
Five Daemen students are involved in the production, including four actors—nursing student Kwesi Adae, social work graduate student Shardai Adger, special education graduate student Stephen John III, and nursing student Janessa Johnson—and a stage manager, English major Jenna Havert.
“This is my 11th production of both devised and scripted work with Daemen students, and I love being able to draw on my experience as a director and teacher at the same time,” said Dr. Robert Waterhouse, associate professor of English. “There is a lot of passion for theatre on campus, and I always enjoy working with our talented students who thrive onstage, and rise to the challenges of mounting a production.”
Waterhouse added, “This production is a proud participant in ‘100 Years for 100 Countries,’ a festival consisting of performances in 100 countries worldwide, produced by the Fo Rame Foundation for the centenary of Fo’s birth.”
Mistero Buffo debuts on April 15 at 7:30 p.m., with a second performance on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Both performances are free for Daemen students; $5 for non-students.
