Daemen faculty and staff continue to encourage students to exercise their right to vote with the “Get Civically Fit” initiative.
Launched in 2020, co-sponsored by the departments of History & Political Science, Athletics, Institutional Advancement, and Student Affairs, Get Civically Fit aims to inspire students to build their civic literacy, amplify their political voice, and take to the polls.
“We strive to instill in all students the importance of political engagement and fulfilling their civic responsibilities,” said Lisa Parshall, Professor of Political Science and Pre-law advisor at Daemen. “We provide resources for each student’s unique polling needs and work to dispel misinformation in a nonpartisan way by distinguishing between rhetoric and reality, empowering students to make informed decisions.”
Daemen kicked off this semester’s voter registration efforts on Sept. 17, National Voter Registration Day, providing students with resources to register to vote, request absentee ballots, and identify their polling location for early and election day voting.
In preparation for the upcoming presidential election, the History & Political Science department held one final voter registration drive on Oct. 23 before New York State’s Oct. 26 voter registration deadline. They also had absentee ballot applications readily available for those who needed one.
“The stakes have never been higher, and it’s crucial for younger voters to make their voices heard by heading to the polls,” said Parshall. “Every vote counts.”
In addition to providing voter support, Daemen has hosted election watch parties. Most recently, the university hosted on-campus watch parties for the presidential and vice-presidential debates.
