Cats Top Mercyhurst in Wildcat Den Classic Finale

Daemen Finishes 2-1 in Season Opening Tournament

AMHERST, N.Y. - In the Wildcat Den Classic tournament finale on Monday, the Daemen University women's volleyball team moved back into the win column with a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-15) sweep of the Mercyhurst Lakers. 

The Wildcats land two players on the All-Tournament team in senior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, K.Y.) and graduate student outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) for their efforts throughout the three matches they played in. Daemen wraps up the Wildcat Den Classic with a 2-1 record after splitting Sunday's matches. Mercyhurst went 0-3 during the tournament, and moves to 1-5 on the year. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Burns earned All-Tournament honors after recording 27 kills, 29 digs and a solo block in the nine sets she played this weekend. Against the Lakers on Monday, she accounted for nine kills with only two errors for a .241 hitting percentage. 
  • Logan finished the tournament with 21 kills, 22 digs and an assisted block. She averaged 3.0 kills/set and earned All-Tournament team honors. 
  • Junior outside hitter/right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) knocked down 10 kills with only three errors against Mercyhurt to finish with a .318 hitting percentage on Monday. She finished with 17 kills in eight sets on the weekend.
  • Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) continued to see time as the Wildcats' primary setter this weekend. The junior averaged 10.7 assists per set against the Lakers and earned a double-double on Monday with 32 assists and 10 digs. 
  • Junior middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) recorded 18 kills, two assisted blocks and six aces in the nine sets she played in the tournament.
  • Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) tallied eight kills and just two errors against the Lakers to finish with 17 kills in eight sets on the weekend.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen totaled 48 kills in the match to finish with a .269 hitting percentage, compared to just 26 kills for the Lakers. 
  • Mercyhurst played the Wildcats close throughout the match, but especially late in the second when the Lakers went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. With the game tied up at 24, an attack error by the Lakers gave the Cats the one-point advantage, and Armstrong finished the set off with a kill to win it 26-24.  
  • 19 of the Wildcats' 25 points in the third set came on kills, with Daemen posting an impressive .474 hitting percentage in the final set. 
  • Errors plagued Daemen during the first two sets, with the Wildcats committing 15 attack errors and 10 service errors. They cleaned it up in the third, amassing just one attack error and two service errors in the final set of the match.

GAME NOTES
  • Today's match marked the 14th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Lakers. Mercyhurst leads the series 10-4, but Daemen has won the last two meetings.
  • The Wildcat Den Classic is the first of two straight tournaments that Daemen is participating in this season. The Wildcats travel to play in the East Region Clash this upcoming weekend. 
  • Daemen is the reigning East Coast Conference regular season and tournament champion, and is the favorite this win the ECC again this season. 
  • The Wildcats return 12 players and five All-Conference selections from last season's championship roster. In the 2021 season, Daemen led the league in kills per set, and three of the top four leaders in kills from last year return in 2022. 

UP NEXT
Daemen hits the road for the first time this season as they travel to Springfield, Mass. for the East Region Clash presented by the International Volleyball Hall of Fame this weekend (Sept. 9-10). The Wildcats will face three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, facing Saint Anselm, American International, Bridgeport and Bentley.
