The inaugural ASCEND (Academic Success & Career Exploration for New Directions) class began its first semester, which kicked off with orientation on Aug. 29.
The ASCEND program — with generous support from the Peter & Elizabeth Tower Foundation — is the first comprehensive transition and postsecondary program in Western New York that provides students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to develop academic, career, and independent living skills. The program is led by ASCEND Director, Lisa Casper and Graduate Assistant Program Coordinator, McKenna Rashko.
“Being part of ASCEND allows me to support students as they embrace the college experience, gain independence, and work toward their goals,” said Rashko. “It’s a privilege to see them grow, succeed, and enjoy all that Daemen has to offer!”
While students have attended classes for just a few weeks, they’ve already been positively impacted.
“I enjoy entrepreneur classes with Daniel Shanahan. I like talking about technical skills and negotiating skills. I also like his videos. I also like class with McKenna.” — Student, Colin F.
“What I like most about the Daemen ASCEND program is the classes and the teachers because they’re helping me get to my goals. I also like having a mentor because they help me find my way around campus. I liked going to the women’s volleyball game because I used to play volleyball in unified sports in high school. I am proud to be a Wildcat!” — Student, Kayla G.
“I want to thank our campus community for warmly supporting the launch of the ASCEND program,” said Casper. “From orientation to our Gearing Up speaker and the start of classes, their encouragement and partnership are helping our students begin their journey with confidence and excitement.”
