Philanthropist Mary Wilson, a Life Trustee of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, was honored with the 2024 Community Excellence Award at the annual Daemen University Scholarship Gala in recognition of her profound impact on the community.
“Mary Wilson embodies the spirit of Daemen,” said President Gary A. Olson. “Her unwavering dedication and heartfelt contributions have transformed countless lives and inspired others to do the same. On behalf of Daemen University, I am delighted to present the Community Excellence Award to Mary in recognition of her selfless leadership and the positive impact she has made on our community.”
In 2006, Wilson founded the Western New York Girls in Sports program, empowering over 200 girls aged 9 to 12 by introducing them to various sports taught by young athletes from local universities and sports clubs. Her generosity and support for local organizations, including the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Oishei Children’s Hospital, and FeedMore WNY, reflect her deep commitment to enriching the lives of those around her.
Wilson, a former board member of the USTA Tennis Foundation, competed in the Wimbledon Championships in 1976. Wilson also served as President of the National Senior Women’s Tennis Association, playing in many international events, and becoming ranked number one in the 60 and over category.
“Mary’s love for the Buffalo community is limitless, and she is in turn cherished by those she serves,” said Olson. “Mary is an inspiring role model whose commitment and leadership continue to make a difference in our community. We are truly honored to celebrate her legacy tonight.”
