Bartlo Scores Twice To Lead Wildcats To 6-1 Win Over Saints

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored twice and graduate student Carlos Espana (Madrid, Spain) added a goal and an assist to lead the Daemen University men's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over D'Youville University this afternoon at Williamsville South High School.

Daemen snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the East Coast Conference. D'Youville suffered its eighth-straight loss and fell to 1-11-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen opened the scoring just nine seconds into the game. Bartlo took a pass from junior Michel Holscher (Hamminkein, Gremany) off the opening kickoff and beat D'Youville goalkeeper Ethan Picard for what most likely is the fastest goal Daemen has ever scored in the history of the program.
  • The Wildcats took control with two goals in the span of one minute 14 minutes later. The Saints were charged with an own goal at 14:18 when a defender deflected a cross by Daemen freshman Cody Cavuoto (Rochester, N.Y.) into the D'Youville net. Espana then netted an unassisted tally at 15:22 to give Daemen a 3-0 lead.
  • Bartlo notched his second of the game with just under five minutes to play in the first half and the hosts took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Wildscats scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Junior Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) scored of a nice feed from freshman Sujan Rajamohan (Spencerport, N.Y.) and 50:15 and Cavuoto closed out the Daemen scoring off a feed from Espana at 54:53.
  • The Saints denied Daemen the shutout when freshman Aaron Baffour scored in the 59th minute.
  • Daemen posted a 24-12 advantage in shots overall and a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Graduate student Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) started in net for Daemen and made three saves before giving way to freshman Harry Firth (Reading, England) in the 78th minute. Picard went the distance for D'Youville and made eight saves.
