AMHERST, N.Y. – Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) of the Daemen University men's basketball team has been honored by the East Coast Conference for his play last week. Atkins was selected the ECC Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for games played Nov. 6-12. The announcement of award winners was made via the league's weekly sport report, which was released this afternoon. It marks the first time this season and the fourth time in his career that Atkins has collected a weekly honor from the ECC. He was named the ECC Player of the Week once and ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice last year.

Atkins shot 63-percent (10-16) from the field and totaled 23 points, 12 rebound, three steals and three blocks while leading the Wildcats to win over Chestnut Hill College (88-50) and Goldey-Beacom College (75-67) during the East Region Challenge at Lumsden Gymnasium this past weekend. He totaled 14 points, nine boards, three steals and three blocks in the win over CHC, and headed up a defense that limited the Griffins to just 29-percent shooting over (19-for-64) and just 22 first-half points. The next day he helped the Wildcats limit Goldey-Beacom to just 40-percent shooting (24-for-60) and just 67 points. GBC shot 59-percent (39-for-66) and scored a tournament-record 113 points in a 113-109 win over Roberts Wesleyan in the opening round.

Atkins was a first-team All-ECC selection last year and was recently named the 2023-24 ECC Preseason Player of the Year. He opened the 2023-24 season with a career-high 23 points in a loss to Western Washington University during the CCA Division II Canadian Tip-Off Classic and has scored in double figures in three of the five games this season. He is averaging 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds and leads the team in steals (8) and blocks (7).

Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) was named to the weekly ECC honor roll. The MVP of the East Region Challenge, he averaged 16.5 points over the two games and scored a game-high 23 points during the win over Goldey-Beacom on Sunday. Fasoyiro has scored in double figures in the last four games and is averaging a team-high 14.4 points.

Daemen stands at 3-2 on the year and returns to action Wednesday (Nov. 15) when it travels to Erie, Pa. to take on nationally-ranked Mercyhurst University.
