Graduating Student-Athlete Profile: Alex Hasiotis

Leading up to Daemen University's commencement ceremonies this weekend, daemenwildcats.com is profiling several student-athletes who have completed their academic coursework and/or athletic eligibility.

Alex Hasiotis has been a five-year member of the Daemen women's bowling program. In that time, she helped the Wildcats to 164 wins while winning numerous tournament championships. This past season, with Hasiotis using an additional year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19, she led the team to a program-record 55 victories and bowled a 300 Baker game along the way. Hasiotis was also recently named the recipient of the C.L.A.W. Award recognizing her as the graduating student-athlete who displayed the best character, leadership, academic achievement and work ethic.

  • AH: Master of Science in Athletic Training.

  • AH: My favorite memories are from our Delaware trip this past February for many reasons. As a team, we bowled phenomenal and improved everyday, starting in fourth place, moving into second place, and then finishing in first place after a hard fought championship match to win the title. Our performances that weekend played a big role in our team receiving national ranking by NTCA in the March poll. The night before the final day of the tournament, we were doing cartwheels in the hallway of the hotel, and Emma, Mollie, Paige, and myself got Squishmallows from Walmart when we stopped to get more snacks. Everyone’s energy that weekend was exactly where it needed to be on the lanes and we had so much fun. My favorite memories from my last ECC tournament trip are qualifying first out of 13 teams, making our Daemen Dolphins tags in the hotel, going to the beach and shopping in the Hamptons, and making videos in the airport before we flew home.

  • AH: My impression of Daemen when I first arrived was that it is a small community, and that impression still holds true today. Everyone I have interacted with, administration, faculty, teammates, and classmates, have all played a role in shaping me into the person I am today and I’m very grateful for my experiences at Daemen.

  • AH: For me, what makes Daemen such a great environment are the people here, so I’m going to miss seeing peers and faculty from the Athletics Department and the athletic training program that I have become close with.

  • AH: I think my most meaningful and favorite accomplishments come from this past February. I found out on the Friday night before the Medaille Tournament that I passed my Board of Certification exam for athletic training, which I had taken earlier in the season, and then that weekend bowled a Baker 300 game against the tournament host, throwing the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth strikes in the tenth frame of the fifth Baker game to win a close match. When I accomplished that, I felt like I was perfectly balancing being an athletic training student and a student-athlete, which had not always come easy for me.

  • AH: My athletic trainer, Karen Roehling, has had a huge influence on me. She has guided me through injuries, surgeries, and health issues with empathy and kindness, as well as shaped me as a student while teaching classes in the athletic training program. She has many traits I strive to exemplify as a newly certified athletic trainer. She is so supportive and encouraging of her patients, she is creative and innovative when writing rehab programs, and she is willing to and often goes the extra mile for her patients and coworkers whenever necessary.

  • AH: This summer I am starting my job as an athletic trainer at Excelsior Orthopedics with outreach for high school sports.

  • AH: Enjoy every moment during your time here - all the tournament trips with your team, every game, every practice, every lift. Try to see the positive in every challenge, and embrace those challenges, because you can learn something from every experience. Finally, trust your coach and your teammates and enjoy the ride.
