Faculty, staff, and students played it forward this spring, participating in Daemen’s Center for Allied and Unified Sport and Exercise (CAUSE) sessions on April 6 and May 4 at the Scott Bieler College of Health Professions.
The CAUSE sessions gave individuals with disabilities the opportunity to connect with members of the men’s basketball and soccer teams to enhance their well-being through physical activity, recreation, and social interaction.
“It was great to get back in the gym where the joy and laughter was contagious,” said Dr. Diane R. Bessel, MSW Program Director and Chair, Social Work and Sociology at Daemen, adding, “To see the development of relationships between Daemen volunteers and participants over such a short period of time is a testament to what this program is all about. CAUSE leaves a lasting impact on program participants, student volunteers, and athletes alike.”
CAUSE provides opportunities for people with disabilities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience the camaraderie and sportsmanship that comes with athletics participation. In addition, CAUSE provides a supported venue for caregivers to access athletic-based care, participate in health and wellness programs, or simply experience the joy of watching a loved one compete.
