Students from Daemen University’s accounting program are easing the tax filing process for some households by providing free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The program, funded in part by United Way, offers assistance to those with an annual income of less than $73,000. Six student volunteers, who are IRS-certified and passed the ACC318 Income Tax Theory course, have been assisting clients since February 5, and will continue to take appointments on Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. through April 9.
The VITA program has had a profound impact on both the community and students. “Participating in the VITA program has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Iris Roach, Accounting, ‘26. “I have cherished every moment of this journey, particularly the opportunities to connect with clients on a personal level and help them achieve the outcomes they desire. This experience has shaped me in profound ways, teaching me professionalism, empathy, and how to work efficiently under pressure—skills that will undoubtedly serve me well in my future career.”
Last year, seven student volunteers prepared approximately 380 tax returns. To date this year, students have prepared 180 tax returns.
“The VITA program is a great opportunity for our students to practice their accounting skills while giving back to the community,” said Dr. Grace Huff, CPA, VITA co-site supervisor and quality reviewer and adjunct professor of Accounting. “They’re applying what they’ve learned to real-life situations, which helps reinforce confidence, empathy, and important professional skills they will carry with them throughout their careers.
Qualifying taxpayers can call 211 or 888-696-9211 to schedule an appointment. The tax preparation clinic is held in Daemen’s Alfiero School of Business, Room B202.
Clients should bring their original social security card, photo ID, W-2s, 1099 forms, prior year’s tax returns, and other tax-related documentation.
