Wildcats Sweep Central State For Seventh Straight Win

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen men's volleyball team secured its seventh straight win Saturday afternoon when they defeated the visiting Central State Marauders 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Wildcats have dropped only three sets during the course of the winning streak which has happened exclusively on their home floor.

The result improved Daemen's record to 9-2 overall on the season. Central State, which is competing in its inaugural season, fell to 1-10 overall. Today's match was the first-ever meeting between the Wildcats and Marauders. CSU was coming off the first win in program history which they secured last night at D'Youville.

Daemen had control of the match throughout, leading in kills, aces, blocks and assists over their opponents. The Wildcats had 29 kills on a .266 hitting percentage and added nine service aces. The Marauders totaled 26 kills but were limited to an .083 hitting percentage and just four aces.

Daemen began the opening set by scoring seven of the first eight points. The teams then alternated scoring until a hitting error by Central State led to a timeout. Daemen built the lead to eight coming out of the timeout and led by at least four for the remainder of the set.

Central State rattled off four straight points to lead 4-3 early in the second set. This would be Central State's only lead of the day. An eight-point run by Daemen with Krueger at the service line gave the Wildcats a 13-5 lead. Despite the Marauders best efforts, Daemen led by at least three points for the rest of the set en route to the win.

The third set was arguably the most competitive, with the score coming down to 24-22 before senior Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) powered down a kill to secure a Wildcats victory.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Junior middle Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.) shared match-high honors by totaling eight kills while adding three blocks and two aces.
  • Junior outside Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) chipped in six kills in just two sets of action, hitting .417 for the match.
  • Moffitt and sophomore opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) split eight kills as part of Daemen's balanced offense.
  • Senior Michael Krueger (Canonsburg, Pa.) and junior Gavin Musielak (Eden, N.Y.) split time at setter today. Krueger played the first two sets and totaled 15 assists and three aces. Musielak came on in relief and totaled nine assists in the just the third set.
  • D'Aaron McCraney (eight kills) and Marcus Franck (20 assists) paced the Marauders.
