Daemen Wraps Up Regular Season Slate With 65-39 Win At Queens

Ivy scores team-high 14 points in second half, ECC Tournament now on horizon for Wildcats

FLUSHING, N.Y. – One chapter closes and another will soon open for Daemen women's basketball.

Behind balanced scoring and a galore of scoring sprees throughout the game, the Wildcats wrapped up their 2021-22 regular season campaign in style with a 65-39 victory against Queens College Saturday afternoon in Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

Coming off Thursday's win at Molloy that resulted in a third straight ECC regular season title and locking up the No. 1 seed for next week's ECC Tournament, the Wildcats received strong offensive production today from senior Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) who scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half and tied for the team-high with eight rebounds. Senior guard Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.) also crossed double-figures in scoring with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

With the victory, Daemen heads into postseason play with an 18-4 overall record, 16-1 in ECC play and are now winners in 16 of their last 17 contests. In what was being billed as their Senior Day contest and season finale, Queens finished 4-21 and 3-15 in ECC play.

Daemen secured a 9-0 lead just three minutes into the contest as Matz started the stretch with her lone three-point field goal of the day and shortly afterwards connected on a long jumper. Titus and redshirt senior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) also got in the scoring spree with a lay-up each before the Knights called a timeout with 7:24 left in the opening frame. The time-out sparked the Knights, who rattled off eight unanswered points – five coming from senior guard Nora Gabel alone – to cut the deficit to one point, 9-8, with 5:56 left. Daemen found some breathing room after Filbert's three-pointer and junior forward Marina Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.) old-fashioned three-play to five Daemen a seven-point lead. Titus' lone trey of the afternoon with 2:47 left ended the first quarter scoring (18-10 Daemen.)

After Titus made back-to-back baskets to open the second quarter, Queens ended its eight-minute scoring drought with a jumper from freshman Aalia Carlson with 7:52 remaining (22-12 Daemen.) The Knights kept the score at eight points on two separate occasions – the second time thanks to junior Khadija Demry's lay-up – to only trail Daemen 26-18 with just over four minutes left in the first half. A three-pointer from veteran Autumn Buchsenschutz (Port Allegany, N.Y.) and a Titus jumper gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the first half, 31-18, with 2:36 left. The Knights brought the score back within double-digits as Demry got the steal and went the length of the court for the lay-up with five seconds remaining. Daemen went into the locker room with a 31-22 lead.

The Knights kept the contest close as Carlson's basket brought Daemen's to within nine points once more, 35-26, with 7:48 left in the third quarter. However, the Daemen offense went on a game-changing 9-0 run over the next 4:05 to expand their lead up to 18 points, 44-26, with under four minutes left in the frame. Ivy had the exclamation point of the contest as, off a blocked shot from Titus, got the second-chance opportunity, drew the contact for the basket and later converted the free-throw. Freshman guard Sydney Hvizdzak (Little Valley, N.Y.) followed shortly after with a make from beyond the arc and Daemen had a 47-28 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Wildcats secured the victory with an 18-7 run over almost eight minutes of the fourth quarter. Ivy scored seven points in the frame alone, including making just her second three-pointer of the season to conclude her scoring day at the 5:55 mark (58-34 Daemen.) Later, junior guard Sarah Cloutier (San Diego, Calif.) and her put-back basket gave Daemen a 31-point lead (65-34), the team's largest lead of the contest.
