Nolet Places First In The Mile To Pace Daemen At The Highlander Invitational

Amirato and Schultz Both Post Multiple Top-Five Finishes

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's track and field team took part in the Highlander Invitational held today at the Kerr-Pegula Field House on the campus of Houghton University.

A first place showing by graduate student Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ont.) in the mile and multiple top-five showings by freshman Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Alyssa Amirato (Depew, N.Y.) highlighted the day for the Wildcats.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nolet placed first out of 36 runners in the mile with a time of 5:17.99. Today's effort comes a month after she placed third out of 21 runners in the mile with a personal best time of 5:15.65 at the Nazareth Alumni Opener, which eclipsed her previous best time of 15:17.19 that she posted at the Brockport Multi last February.
  • Schultz competed in three track events and one field event and placed among the top six in all four. She qualified for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.93 seconds and then placed second out of eight finalists with a time of 9.77 seconds, just four tenths of a second behind the winner—Kara Brown of Messiah. She also qualified for the finals in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.33 seconds—which tied her personal best time. She then placed fourth out of eight finalists with a time of 8.35 seconds. She also ran the 200 meter dash for the first time in her brief career and placed sixth out of 24 runners with a time of 29.13 seconds.  Schultz capped her day by placing third out of 12 entrants in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 10.01 meters.
  • Amirato, who established a program-record in the triple jump (10.75 meters) during the season-opening Houghton December Classic, returned to action today after sitting out the Nazareth Alumni opener. She took part in the triple jump and the long jump today. She placed second out of eight entrants in the triple jump (10.60 meters) and finished third out of 12 in the long jump (4.85 meters).
  • Daemen had five runners take part in the mile and four of them placed in the top 10. Junior Camryn Bailey (Geneva, N.Y.) placed fourth with a personal best time of 5:30.75—eclipsing her previous best time of 5:31.83 she posted at the Brockport Multi last year. Junior Emma Grzebinski (West Seneca, N.Y.) ran the mile for the first time at an indoor event and placed seventh with a time of 5:35.38. Sophomore Emma Cain (Lockport, N.Y.) placed eighth with a personal best time of 5:38.18, while freshman Hayley Pizur (Grand Island, N.Y.) ran the mile for the for the first time and placed 34th (6:42.63).
  • Sophomore Marcy Colca (Getzville, N.Y.) made her season debut today and placed second out iof 24 runners in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:33.85.
  • Graduate student Hannah Thomas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) placed third out of 29 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.11. Freshmen Alexis Nguyen (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Kennedy Pino (Spencerport, N.Y) both ran the 800 meters for the first time and placed 18th (2:44.57) and 24th (2:54.21) respectively.
  • Freshmen Alexis Rodriguez (Willamson, N.Y.) and Grace Gominiak (Darien Center, N.Y.) also saw action today. Rodriguez qualified for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles and went on to place fifth out of eight finalists with a time of 10.59 seconds. She also ran the 200 meter dash for the first time and placed 13th out of 24 runners with a time of 30.08. Gominiak took part in the 200 and 400 meter dash. She placed 16th in the 200 (31.48) and 12th in the 400 (1:12.75).
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Bentley (Belmont, N.Y.) and freshman Samantha Kabel (Alexander, N.Y.) both took part in the weight throw and shot put. Bentley finished third out of 17 entrants in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 12.29 meters—eclipsing her previous best throw of 11.12 meters that she posted last month at the Nazareth Alumni Opener. She also placed eighth out of 25 in the shot put with a toss of 8.86 meters. Kabel finished 10th in the weight throw with a personal best effort of 10.06 meters and finished 19th in the shot put (7.92 meters).
  • Freshman Angelina Natale (Rochester, N.Y.) took part in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.  She placed fifth in the high jump (1.33 meters), ninth in the long jump (4.27 meters) and eighth in the triple jump (9.17 meters).
  • Daemen's 4x400 relay team of Rodriguez, Thomas, Nolet and Gominiak placed fourth out of 13 teams with a time of 4:33.31.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to action next weekend (Jan. 27-28) when they head to Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio to take part in the YSU Mid Major Invitational.
