AMHERST, N.Y. -- Daemen University women's basketball sophomore forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was named East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for competitions taking place February 5 through 11, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. This is Lapertosa's first Defensive Player of the Week honor in her career, and she is the first Wildcat to pick up the award this season.

The 6-foot sophomore forward led the Wildcats defensively on the weekend, averaging 8.5 rebounds per game in Daemen's 1-1 week. Lapertosa totaled 11 boards -- including nine defensive rebounds -- along with four assists, two steals and two blocks in Daemen's 71-44 win over Staten Island on Friday night. The Wildcats mounted a second-half comeback against District of Columbia on Sunday afternoon but fell just short, 71-65. Lapertosa finished with six rebounds, four defensive, and a block along with six points and four assists in the loss.

Lapertosa has made a splash defensively in her first season as a Wildcat, leading the team with 142 total rebounds to average 7.1 boards per game. She also leads the team with 25 total blocks on the season and averages 5.0 points per game.

The Wildcats are 14-6 overall on the year and lead the ECC with a 9-2 record in conference play, and are ranked eighth in the latest D2CSC East Region poll. This upcoming weekend is a big one for Daemen as they welcome St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday night and Mercy on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans are currently second in the league with an 8-3 ECC record, while Mercy is tied with UDC at third with a 7-4 record.
