Three Wildcats Score In Double Digits As Daemen Earns Largest Win Of The Season Over Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's basketball team picked up its largest victory of the season, topping Queens 74-52 on Sunday afternoon. It marked the ninth straight Daemen victory against the Knights, and the first time the Wildcats scored over 66 points in the matchup since Jan. 16, 2022. The Wildcats move to 12-5 on the season and 7-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights drop to 6-14 and 4-6 in ECC.
 
Queens put together a late run in the first to tie the game up at 17 a piece after one, but after the Knights took a 19-17 lead with the first bucket in the second, they never led again. The Wildcats out-scored Queens the final three quarters. Daemen shot 45-percent from the field (29-of-64) and banked 5-of-18 three's (28-percent). The Wildcat defense played exceptional against the Knights. The Wildcats totaled 48 rebounds on the day, their second highest rebound total of the season, and pulled down a season-high 33 defensive boards on the day. 

Three Wildcats totaled double-digit points on the day, with junior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) leading the team with 15 points, junior forward Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) totaling 14 points, and fifth-year senior Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finishing with 10 points in the game. Queens freshman guard Brianna Davis made her first appearance in the matchup against the Wildcats today, and led all shooters with 22 points. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • For the third time this season, Alahna Paige led all Daemen shooters with 15 points on the day, shooting 44-percent (4-of-9) from the field and knocking down a team-high two three point shots as well as a perfect five of five from the free throw line. Paige finished with a team high six defensive rebounds and four assists, and added a steal to her stat line.
  • Natalie Angeletti earned her second-highest point total of the season, shooting 60-percent (6-of-10) from the field for 14 points. Angeletti totaled six rebounds and an assist in her 24 minutes of game play.
  • Mickayla Ivy tallied a season-high four blocks on the day and totaled 10 points off four buckets and two free throws. The fifth year forward pulled down five rebounds and added an assist in the game. 
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen extends their win streak over Queens to nine in a row. The last time the Wildcats lost to the Knights was Feb. 18, 2018.
  • The Wildcats had as much as a 22-point advantage and led for 35 minutes, 87-percent of the game.
  • Daemen scored 70-plus points for the fifth time this season. 
  • After trading points all throughout the first quarter, the Wildcats put together a stellar second quarter of play, outscoring the Knights 23-11 while shooting 47-percent from the field (9-of-19) and 30-percent from beyond the arc (3-of-10. Daemen led 40-28 at the half.
  • Daemen sophomore Julia Hauer (Binghamton, N.Y.) totaled four points and three rebounds in the third quarter, including a buzzer beater layup to lift the Cats up 56 to 41 after 30 minutes of play. Hauer would lead all Wildcats with seven rebounds in the game.
  • The Wildcats tallied 23 bench points compared to just 12 for the Knights, and finished with 14 second-chance points and 13 points off turnovers. 
  • Daemen committed a season-low eight personal fouls against Queens, marking the first time this season that the Wildcats totaled single-digit personal fouls in a game. The Wildcats finished with just 13 turnovers, their second-lowest total of the season (season low 12 turnovers against Mercy on Dec. 11). 
  • Paige tallied multiple assists for the 13th time this season with her four on the day. Queens' Raven Pitt led all players with six assists in the matchup, and ranks second in the ECC for assists per game with 4.4. Paige ranks sixth and averages 2.9 assists per game. 
  • After breaking Daemen's steal record in the NCAA era with her seven steals against Molloy on Friday night, freshman guard Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) finished with two steals on the day. Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.) also totaled two steals. 
  • Two Knights scored in the double-digits today. In the last meeting between Daemen and Queens, no Knight player scored double figure points. 
  • Daemen totaled 15 offensive rebounds against the Knights, marking the 11th time this season that the Wildcats totaled over 10 o-boards.
UP NEXT
Daemen returns home for a pair of ECC matches. The Wildcats will host Staten Island on Friday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 PM, then will seek revenge for last weekend's 68-47 loss against the District of Columbia Firebirds in a noon game on Sunday, Feb. 5.
