Katie (Brooks) Arcara earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and a minor in illustration from Daemen College. She currently works as a designer and storyteller at a Western New York church and for Let Them Laugh Out Loud (Let Them LOL), a grassroots nonprofit that focuses on sustainable development via clean water, education, and therapeutic programs in Buffalo and Sierra Leone, West Africa.
After graduating, Arcara volunteered with Let Them LOL, making her first trip to Sierra Leone in 2012 and then returned four more times as she continued to volunteer design and photography services. She also became involved in Teen Achiever’s, a part of Urban Christian Ministries on Buffalo’s East Side.
Arcara and her husband, Peter, also worked with Journey’s End Refugee Services, where they served as match grant mentors with families from Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Afghanistan. They are now completing certification to become foster parents.
“I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had since graduating that were inspired by so many great Daemen experiences, faculty, and students who challenged, encouraged, and inspired me in my life,” said Arcara. “My professors invested in my whole education and gave me the tools I needed to do my job well and to best serve the community.”
