UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO SPRING OPENER -- FULL RESULTS

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's track and field team placed third out of seven teams at the University at Buffalo Spring Opener today. The event took place on the UB campus.

A school-record effort by sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) in the 3,000 meter run highlighted the day for the Wildcats.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Moote, who turned in a solid effort during the 5,000 meter run last weekend, placed 12th out of 40 runners in the 3,000 meters today with a program-record time of 9:04.13—20 seconds faster than the previous standard set by Jeremy Rushok (9:24.05) at the 2015 Coastal Carolina Invitational. It marked the first time that Moote has run the 3,000 meters at an outdoor event during his brief collegiate career. Moote now owns both the indoor and outdoor program record for the 3,000 meters, as he posed a program-record time of 9:04.55 at the Kane Invitational this past January.
  • Senior Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) picked up where he left off last weekend when he set a new program record in the 110 meter hurdles. Today it was the 400 meter hurdles, as he placed first among two entrants with a time of 58.17 seconds. His time today ranks as the sixth fastest in program history and just a second shy of the program record of 57.25 that Matthews set last spring at the East Coast Conference Outdoor Championships. Matthews, who posted a time of 57.48 in this event last weekend at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational, now owns the top six times in program history for the 400 meter hurdles.
  • Matthews also took part in the 100 meter dash, the long jump and the triple jump today. He finished tied for 12th place in the 100 meter dash with teammate Samir Laroussi (Clarance, N.Y.) with a time of 11.66 seconds. It marked the first time Matthews has participated in the 100 meter dash during his career. He was also the top Daemen finisher and placed sixth overall in the long jump (5.95 meters), and placed fourth in the triple jump (12.07 meters).
  • Daemen had nine entrants in the 3,000 meters, and five of the times posted today now rank among the top-10 fastest times in program history for the 3,000 meters. Junior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) placed second among Daemen runners and 24th overall with a time of 9:32.98—which ranks as the third fastest time in program history. It marked the first time in his career that Clementi has ran the event. Sophomore Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) placed 25th with a personal best time of 9:36.37—which ranks as the fifth fastest time in program history. Sophomore Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y) ran the 3,000 meters for the first time in his career and placed 28th with a time of 9:46.66—which ranks as the sixth fastest time in program history. Sophomore David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) placed 32nd with a personal best time of 9:58.77—which ranks as the eighth fastest time in program history.
  • Clementi and Ceccarelli also posted top-10 efforts in the 800 meters. Clementi placed first among five Daemen entrants and sixth out of 25 entrants overall with a time of 2:00.32. Ceccarelli placed 10th with a personal best time of 2:04.35. Junior John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) also ran both the 800 meters and the 3,000 meters. He placed 12th in the 800 (2:04.57) and 36th in the 3,000 (10:22.32).
  • Sophomore Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and placed second out of four entrants with a personal time of 10:29.44.
  • Freshman Hayden Grover (Alden, N.Y.) took part three events today. He ran the 100 meter dash for the first time in his collegiate career and paced 15th (12.56). He also placed ninth in the 200 meter dash (26.37) and 11th in the long jump (4.71 meters).
  • Freshman Jake Elias (Depew, N.Y.) and sophomore Jake Carroll (Rochester, N.Y.) took part in the shot put, discus throw, hammer throw and javelin.
