Karen Cash works in the Division of Student Affairs and is the special assistant to the senior vice president of strategic initiatives. Last month, she was awarded the Unsung Hero Award during the annual Student Leadership Awards. Let’s learn more about Karen.
What is a typical day like in the Student Affairs office?
There is no typical day. I have worked in Student Affairs for almost 15 years and no two days have been alike, which I prefer. The Student Affairs umbrella covers many departments with a wide variety of services, so one day, I might be helping Student Activities, and another day I’ll be helping Housing and Residence Life, and another day I’ll be helping Campus Safety, and another day I’ll be helping Orientation. The list goes on. As the special assistant to Dr. Greg Nayor, senior vice president for strategic initiatives, there is never a dull moment.
What is your favorite part of your role at Daemen?
I like helping people. Anything I can do to help someone makes my day. Fortunately, as I juggle the various tasks and projects that are my responsibility, I collaborate with many individuals, and I hope my interactions with them are positive and beneficial.
If you were asked to pass along one bit of advice to a new student, what would it be?
I try to remind new students there is no “right” way to be at Daemen. You might think that you are going in one direction, and then after a class or activity, you realize you are meant to go in a different direction. The experience itself is transformative, and allow yourself to be open to all it has to offer.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I am a local thespian, acting in community theatre mostly. I have worked professionally in regional theatre as well. I recently finished a show, Rumors by Neil Simon at the Towne Players. I have a long list of credits that I will not bore you with. I love the theatre community, and being on stage, connecting with an audience, and hearing them respond is a true delight.
