In the week leading up to Election Day, Daemen College’s “Get Civically Fit” initiative offered a 2020 election preview panel discussion that featured experts on presidential elections.
The question and answer discussion on the upcoming election included panelists Dr. Penny Messinger, history and political science department chair and associate professor; Dr. Lisa Parshall, professor of political science; Dr. Bohdan Szklarski, professor of political science at the University of Warsaw (participated through Zoom); and Jay Wendland, associate professor of political science.
Panelists discussed what to expect with the upcoming election, what might happen next, and what to know before heading to the polls. Attendees participated in-person in the Wick Center Alumni Lounge or virtually via Zoom.
In a recent letter to the campus community, Daemen President Gary Olson underscored the importance of the “Get Civically Fit” initiative and peaceful civic engagement.
“Historically, Election Day is one filled with hope and enthusiasm for the future. It is no secret that this year has a much different tone,” said Olson. “The country feels divided and rhetoric has become hostile. As an institution of higher education, Daemen plays a leading role in providing a safe and inclusive community for healthy discourse and productive civic engagement.”
Olson noted that, like the pandemic, the college community will weather the post-election challenges that may arise together.
“While we cannot control what happens nationally, we do have the ability to foster an environment on this campus that is respectful, peaceful, caring, and supportive,” said Olson. “Different viewpoints and a free exchange of ideas are the hallmarks of an institution of higher education, but these only work in a peaceful environment where people are valued as fellow community members.”
As a part of the “Get Civically Fit” initiative, Daemen will offer shuttles to voting locations for students who need transportation on Election Day. More information can be found on the dedicated website.
