CLINCHED! Wildcats Earn Fourth Straight ECC Regular Season Title With 70-53 Win Over D'Youville

AMHERST, N.Y. – CLINCHED!! For the fourth straight season, the Daemen University women's basketball team were named the East Coast Conference regular season champions. Daemen topped crosstown foe D'Youville 70-53 in the regular season finale at Lumsden Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, finishing off the regular season with an 18-4 overall record and 13-3 record in ECC play. The Saints dropped to 10-14 and 8-8 in the ECC.
 
With the win, the Wildcats earned the top seed in the ECC Tournament, earning the right to host the ECC Semifinals and Championship game next weekend (March 4-5). Daemen will play the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 seed game (Dist. of Columbia vs. Staten Island) that plays on Wednesday. 
 
Six players were honored on Daemen's Senior Night prior to tipoff, with pregame celebrations honoring guard Paige Emborsky (Newfane. N.Y.), guard Alina Estrella (Brooklyn, N.Y.), forward Gina Fumerelle (Amherst, N.Y.), forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.), forward Marina Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.) and guard Maddy Stearns (Clarence, N.Y.) for their last regular season home game. Estrella, Fumerelle, Ivy, Maerkl and Stearns all started for the Wildcats today in a Senior Night tradition.
 
The Wildcats shot 56-percent from the field (27-of-48) and 41-percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc on the day. Three Daemen players totaled double-digit figures, with Emborsky leading all scorers with 18 points. Ivy and Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) also scored in the double figures today. D'Youville's Sofie Fuglsang scored 14 points to lead the way for the Saints. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Paige Emborsky finished with 18 points, shooting 56-percent (5-of-9) from the field and knocking down four three point field goals as well as a perfect four of four from the stripe. The graduate student tallied an assist, one rebound and a block. 
  • Mickayla Ivy shot 75-percent (6-of-8) from the field to total 12 points on the day. The fifth year forward led the way at the boards with a team-high 8 rebounds, as well as three assists, a steal and a block. 
  • Alahna Paige totaled 11 points after shooting 80-percent (4-of-5) from the field and knocking down a three and both free throws on the day. Paige tallied three assists, two steals and two rebounds. 
  • In her final regular season home game, Alina Estrella finished with nine points, shooting 60-percent (3-of-5) from the field and 67-percent (2-of-3) from beyond the arc. Estrella snagged a rebound and notched a steal on the day.  
GAME NOTES
  • The Wildcats have won the ECC regular season title for the past four seasons, first sharing the title with St. Thomas Aquinas in the 2019-20 season, then being sole champions for 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
  • The Wildcats own a perfect 10-0 record at Lumsden Gymnasium this season, and have amassed a 48-6 record at home since the beginning of the 2018-19 season.
  • D'Youville opened up the game on a 7-0 run, but the Wildcats put together a 14-2 run and held a lead all the way to the end of the first. Daemen led D'Youville 20-13.
  • Daemen shot 73-percent from the field in the first, going 8-of-11 and knocked down 2-of-3 three balls.
  • Paige led all Daemen shooters with five first-quarter points, including a buzzer beater layup to give the Wildcats the seven-point lead after one.
  • Daemen led 33-25 at the half. Eight different Wildcats recorded first half points, with Ivy, Estrella and Angeletti each scoring six points in the first two quarters.
  • The Wildcats shot 56-percent from the field (14-of-25) and 33-percent (2-of-6) from beyond the arc in the first half.
  • Emborsky drained back-to-back three point field goals in the third quarter, marking the 14th game this season that she banked multiple three's.
  • The Wildcats led 52-42 after three quarters, narrowly outscoring the Saints 19-17 in the quarter.
  • Daemen went on a tear in the fourth quarter after being up by just 10 points after three quarters. The Wildcats outscored the Saints 18-11 in the fourth quarter. 
  • The Wildcats led by as much as 19 points in the final quarter.
  • Daemen scored 28 points in the paint tonight. 
  • Gina Fumerelle and Maddy Stearns both scored on Senior Night, and they scored back-to-back. Fumerelle scored on a jumper late in the game, and Stearns banked a driving layup with 16 seconds left to give Daemen their final points of the game. 
  • Daemen has won eight straight games by an average of 20.3 points per game.
  • The Wildcats are ranked 10th in the East Region in the official NCAA Division II Regional Rankings. The NCAA announces 10-team rankings for each of the eight regions across the country for three successive weeks leading up to the NCAA Championship selection announcement, which will be made this year on Sunday, March 5.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats will face the winner of Dist. of Columbia and Staten Island in the ECC semifinal game on Saturday, March 4. UDC and Staten Island will face off in the play-in game on Wednesday.
